That HD thing
Okay, I need definitive answers on this whole HDTV thing...

When exactly will all TV be broadcastin HD? What am I going to have to do in order to watch TV on my current sets? How much is all this gonna cost me? And while we're at it, LCD, Plasma, DLP, what should people be buying?

hey, Well... Let me attact them one at a time:
  • they keep moving back the date for when everything will be required to be all digital. I think it is now 2009. It as 2005 then 2006.
  • In order to watch HDTV (High Definition Television) Broadcasts on a SDTV (Standard Definition Television) or even an EDTV (Enhanced Definition Television) you will need to use a converter. Basically the equivalent of the old Cable Boxes. Most people with digital cable already have these boxes that will down convert to SDTV.
  • As far as the kind of tv to buy, let me break it down by type: (this may not be accurate, but I believe it's pretty darn close)
    • LCD - Fixed Resolution, pretty expensive though getting cheaper every day, good for regular tv watching (for when lights are on), hangable
    • Plasma - Fixed resolution, second expensive (I think they are down to around $1500 for a 42inch), great for viewing with lights off, hangable
    • DLP rear projection - fixed Resolution, pretty expensive (around $5k for a 60inch), thin (about the depth of a standard 27inch CRT
    • LCD Rear Projection - like DLP, but uses 3 lcd panels (one for each color). Pretty expensive, fixed resolution, thin (about the depth of a standard 27inch crt).
    • CRT Rear Projection - Probably the cheapest solution for size, variable resolutions, bulky
    • Front Projetion (DLP,CRT,LCD) - These are about the same as thier rear rpojection counter parts, but the priced vary depending on the leve of quality. You can get SDTV one for about $500 and ranging up to about $30,000 for an HDTV (1080p) Fujistu DLP Projector

I hope this helps you out :D
